About 300 Toyota Prius hybrid cars are being recalled in Australia over a parking brake defect.

Toyota says the parking brake cable can disengage unexpectedly, causing the brakes to fail and if the car is left in any gear other than park, it could start rolling away.

The cars were built between August 2015 and October 2016, with 340,000 Prius vehicles being recalled globally.

The manufacturer is investigating reports of crashes, injuries and deaths - none have occurred in Australia, it says.

Customers can call the Toyota recall campaign helpline on 1800 987 366.
