Travel a high priority despite $A fall

The weaker Australian dollar hasn't dampened the appetite for travel, with almost one in three Australians planning to spend their hard earned on a holiday.

Buying or renovating property remains the prime motivation for 32 per cent of Australians to save, but MasterCard's biannual Consumer Purchasing Priorities survey shows travel is now second, at 29 per cent.

MasterCard country manager Andrew Cartwright said it was interesting that travel is such a priority despite the Australian dollar's recent fall.

"Maybe that's why they need to save, because perhaps it's more expensive than it was previously," he said.

"This definitely strengthens the belief that we are among the most prolific travellers in the world."

The MasterCard survey showed Australians planned to save 17 per cent of their income on average in the first half of 2016.

Despite the relentless media focus on mortgage interest rates, there was a sizeable percentage of the population who weren't burdened by a mortgage, Mr Cartwright said.
