Eurydice Dixon, 22, had performed a show at CBD venue Highlander Bar on Tuesday night just before she was allegedly raped and killed by a man she didn't know.

Her body was found by a passer-by about 2.40am Wednesday at a Carlton North sports field.

Ms Dixon's accused killer, named in court documents as 19-year-old Jaymes Todd, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with one count of rape and one count of murder.

Jaymes Todd turned himself into Broadmeadows police station on Wednesday night, not long after police released a series images of him taken from CCTV footage.

"The male surrendered himself to a police station last night, which was a result of the media coverage we got," homicide detective Andrew Stamper told reporters on Thursday.

Police are confident Ms Dixon's death is not linked to a sex assault in the same area in March.
