It's the first time Mr Turnbull has confirmed the exact amount.

Since the money was donated after June 30, 2016, it wouldn't have been made public by the Australian Electoral Commission until February 2018 if Mr Turnbull hadn't voluntarily disclosed it.

Mr Turnbull has told the ABC that, far from being a bad thing, his donation shows his personal integrity, especially compared to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

"I put my money into the Liberal party's campaign. I am not beholden to the C-F-M-E-U, like Bill Shorten is. I am not beholden to left-wing unions, who own Bill Shorten. I put my money where my mouth is, I stand up for my values with the money that I've made, the money I've paid tax on."
