The US and federal government are in talks to step up the presence of US long-range strike bombers in Australia.

Commander of the US Pacific Air Forces General Lori Robinson has confirmed there are talks about rotating bombers and tankers through northern Australia.

"It gives us the opportunity to strengthen the ties we already have with the Royal Australian Air Force and it gives us the opportunity to train our pilots and understand the theatre," she said in Canberra on Tuesday.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles says he hasn't been consulted on the talks, but he's not surprised or concerned.

"What we see is an opportunity of strengthening the defence of the Top End," he told ABC radio.
