The 55-kilometre bridge will put the three cities it connects within an hour's drive of each other, and is expected to boost economic development and tourism in Hong Kong.

Both Hong Kong and mainland China officials hope the bridge will encourage economic integration at a time of growing tensions between the two, and alleviate concerns over the future of Hong Kong's autonomy.

Critics see the landmark infrastructure project as a white elephant that will struggle to become viable.
