How did the federal government get the encryption law passed parliament and why did Canada arrest Huawei's CFO?

The last parliamentary sitting of the year in Australia has turned out chaotic but eventually led to the passage of new encryption laws.

The Coalition Government has struck a deal with the Opposition, which agreed to pass the encryption laws on the condition the Government agreed to assess Labor's so-called Nauru bill.

Meanwhile, China has opposed the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer in Canada, saying they want her released immediately.

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has been detained by Canadian authorities on behalf of the United States. Selina Kong and Ivan Leung report.
