Hong Kongers reject Beijing's gift of a Palace Museum

Beijing's plan to construct a version of its Palace Museum in the former British colony as a gift has been marred by criticism amid growing tension with the mainland.Just days before Christmas, Hong Kong's No. 2 official, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, surprised the public with a "gift" from Beijing - the building of a local version of the national museum to celebrate the 20th anniversary this year of the territory's handover to Chinese rule.Carrie Lam's surprise announcement in Beijing on Dec. 23 to develop a Hong Kong version of the Palace Museum is facing resistance back home.
