What was the biggest parenting culture shock when you first arrived in Australia?
Many Asian families place a strong emphasis on discipline and academic achievement, while Australian parenting tends to focus more on independence, happiness and balance. Do you see yourself as more of a Chinese-style parent or an Australian-style parent?
Australians are often seen as more relaxed about parenting. Are you comfortable with children getting muddy, sitting on the ground chewing sticks, going barefoot most of the time, or wearing shorts and T-shirts even in winter?
SBS Cantonese invited three guests from different backgrounds and age groups, including a newly arrived father of two young daughters, a mother of three with an Australian partner, and a young Australian-born Chinese, to share their experiences and stories about the cultural differences in parenting and growing up in Australia.
