Australska znanstvena istraživanja nalaze se u lošem položaju, jer se Sjedinjene Američke Države povlače ili zamrzavaju subvencije za visoko obrazovanje, a istovremeno opadaju ulaganja vlade i privatnog sektora. Ovaj razvoj događaja potiče da se pronađu novi izvori financiranja i smanji ovisnost o zaradama na osnovu školarina koje plaćaju strani studenti.
