U Velikoj Britaniji rođeno je osam zdravih beba zahvaljujući eksperimentalnoj metodi koja koristi DNK tri osobe, a razvijena je kako bi se majkama pomoglo da ne prenesu rijetke, teške nasljedne bolesti na svoju djecu. Riječ je o mitohondrijskim mutacijama koje mogu utjecati na više organa, osobito na one koji zahtijevaju mnogo energije – poput mozga, jetre, srca, mišića i bubrega. Ova inovativna metoda izazvala je veliko zanimanje i u Australiji, gdje je zakonski dopuštena donacija mitohondrija.
