An Adelaide council is trialing two smart wheelie bins, which can tell collection crews when they're full.

The Salisbury Council says if the trials prove successful it may invest in another 20.

The bins are fitted with software and hardware which wirelessly tells the council's field services team when they need to be emptied.

They are also fitted with sensors and internal compactors which monitor rubbish levels and compact waste, allowing them to hold up to eight times as much as a standard bin.

"We're always looking for ways we can do things better and smarter in Salisbury," Mayor Gillian Aldridge said.

"It's about providing the best, and the most efficient service to the community we can."

The new bins have been put into service at the St Kilda Playground and in Carisbrook Reserve in Adelaide's north.
