Performance on Melbourne's metropolitan train and tram networks is improving, but penalties have still been issued to the private operators.

Tram cancellations and the non-completion of routes has dropped 25 per cent and train faults are down 20 per cent, new figures released by Public Transport Victoria on Thursday show.

However, private operators Metro Trains and Yarra Trams also missed their punctuality targets and were hit with $750,000 and $300,000 in penalties respectively.
