South Sudanese President Kiir Dissolved the Cabinet and Appointed Four Vice Presidents

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dissolved the entire cabinet and appointed four Vice Presidents ahead of the full formation of the Government on 22 Feb. President Kiir also appointed Dr Riek Machar as the country's First Vice President and Rebecca Nyadeng as the first woman to be the Vice President.

On Friday, many decrees by South Sudanese President Kiir were read by the anchor on the South Sudan state television.  President Kiir as promised dissolved the cabinet, sacked two Vice Presidents and senior advisors. Dr Riek Machar was appointed the First Vice President and three other Vice Presidents. Before the appointments, the State's television's anchor read out the republican decree number 23 for the relieve of national Ministers of the Transitional Government of National Unity(GNU).

"I President Salva Kiir Mayardit, president of South Sudan, do hereby issue this republican decree for relieve of National Ministers of the Transitional Government of National Unity(TGONU) with effect from the 21 Feb 2020 A.D."

On Thursday, President Kiir and Dr Riek Machar agreed to form the revitalised Government of National unity. President also promised to appoint his Vice Presidents starting with Dr Riek before a 22 Feb deadline. The decree of Riek's appointment was read out on the state television as Republican decree number 17 on Friday.

"I President Salva Kiir Mayardit, president of South Sudan, do hereby issue this republican decree for the appointment of H.E. Dr Riek Machar Teny as the first Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan with effect from the February 21ruary 2020 A.D.," said a statement read on state television.

The republican decree number 18 was the appointment of the other three Vice Presidents from Dr Wani Igga, Taban Deng Gai and Rebeca Nyandeng Garang, the wife of the former President Dr John Garang de Mabior. According to the revitalised peace agreement, President Kiir was supposed to be deputised by five Vice Presidents. The opposition alliance known as SSOA (South Sudan Opposition Alliance) failed to submit in the name of the nominee for the position of the fifth Vice President.

"I President Salva Kiir Mayardit, president of South Sudan, do hereby issue this republican decree for the appointment of Vice Presidents of the Republic of South Sudan with effect from the February 21ruary 2020."

 President Kiir reappointed Hon Minister Mayiik Ayii as the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Tut Gatluak as the Presidential advisor on National Security Affairs. The four Vice Presidents, one Minister and the Security Advisor, will then be responsible for the formation of the revitalised Transitional Government later on 22 Feb. 


 

Who are the Vice Presidents?

Dr Riek Machar was the former Vice President of GOSS or the Government of South Sudan from 2005- 2011 and the Vice President of the Republic from 2011-July 2013. He was appointed again as the first Vice President from 26 Apr 2016 – 23 Jul 2016. He will now resume his role for the third time as the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan.

Dr Wani Igga served as the Speaker of the Parliament, Vice President of the Republic and then appointed in 2016 as a Vice President. He will continue to serve as one of the five Vice Presidents in the revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity.

Taban Deng Gai was a former governor of Unity State, a senior member in the SPLM IO led by Dr Riek Machar until July of 2016. He was appointed the first Vice President to President Salva Kiir in July of 2016-2020. He will now serve as one of the five Vice Presidents.

Rebecca Nyandeng Garang was a former Minister, Presidential Advisor to President Kiir, member of the SPLM G10 and now she will serve as the first woman to hold the position of the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan in history.

 The names of the fifth Vice President are yet to be announced and will update you on all these changes when the full Government is formed later today.
