South Sudanese presidential press secretary Ateny Wek Ateny defended the decision made by the President of the Republic of South Sudan for sacking former chief of General Staff Paul Malong Awan. Ateny also raised previous corruption allegations made against the former Secretary of SPLM Pagan Amum. Ateny said that they have a report which implicates Pagan on how the SPLM's funds were used during his tenure.

In his interview with SBS Dinka on 13/07/2017, Ateny argued that position of Chief of General Staff can be changed by the president anytime he wants.

People have to know that it is the prerogative of the President to employ and sack any chief of General Staff. If that is not the case then James Hoth Mai could have continued his position without being relieved? Malong is chief of General staff number five since the formation of SPLM. This started with William Nyuon, Salva Kiir Mayardit, Oyay Deng Ajak, James, Malong Awan and now Ajongo Mawut. If the change was not part of the process then Kiir could have continued as chief of general staff until now.

Here is the part two of the interview Ateny also talk about the challenges being face by the Government of South Sudan. He also rejected the narrative of South Sudan being a failed State. Here is the second part of interview….
