Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuch joined the SPLA as a young man in 1983. He was commissioned as a security officer before he was moved to be personal secretary of William Nyuon Bany the former SPLA chief of General Staff and deputy. When SPLM/A split in 1991, Dau was in Akobo which is predominantly Nuers land. Knowing that he was working for one of the most visible and strong Nuers son and South Sudanese nationalist William Nyuon, Dau thought the split wouldnt affect him. He thought that his friend and colleague would offer him any protection tribal lines were to be drawn. When it was confirmed that Dr. Riek Machar has declared coup agast Dr. John Garang, Dau decided with Martin Gumwel to escape.


Dau and Martin Gumwel were looking for the best road that could lead to Bor or anywhere they can be safe but instead the were caught 6hours away from Akobo. While in prison, they were tortured then transferred to Nasir-kuerenge to join other senior prisoners. Many of those who were arrested in Kuerenge came from the various Deng communities. Dau was not torture but many of his colleagues that include Manyuon Anyang, Kuol Deng Kuol, Kuereng Yaak and many other people never made it out. They were tortured and killed.
