Ciɛŋë Jiɛ̈ŋ:kɔc ke Gäräŋ Anyiɛth a miit piɔ̈ɔ̈th në rɛ̈ɛ̈kë wënden Apïu

The family of Garang Anyieth and Aguet Ajang moved to USA 5 years ago after living for many years in two refugees camp in Kenya. Their elders son Apiu was ten years old when they went to US. At age 15 in 2017, the family organised an event to symbolised cultural initiation their son Apiu. Event if Apiu was born in the refugee camp never seen how this kind of cultural rite of passage is done, the family thought it was the right time to introduce Apiu to the community. This practice back home in South Sudan was done to boys in many ways. Other communities circumcise, do scarification and the Dinka Bor practice their own way to the rest. Boys between ages 13-16 are camped in one byre for more than two months and such period allow them to reflect on their childhood and adolescent. To Apiu, this was honour to him by his parents and the parents looked at this and the best way to communicate with children. Here is the interview on SBS Dinka Radio
