"I don't think if we will find an elder like Mama Abiol?" Youths pay respect to Mama Abiol

On Friday evening, many South Sudanese young people converged for Candlelight vigil at, Hannah, Watts Park to remember their mentor and elder Mama Abiol Atem Manyang. Abiol was a victim of a hit-and-run on Monday night along Ballarat road.

The family of Amiol from her four children, the father of kids and the extended family members attended the vigil which was organised by the members of the Melbourne Lions wrestling team. The event that lasted more than 1 hours was streamed Live on SBS Dinka Facebook page with live audiences of up to 700. Here is the video.

Kids who attended were as young as five years old. Many of these kids were students of Mama Abiol in her local church. The rest were members of the traditional dancing groups, including the wrestlers.

When wrestling started, Abiol played a crucial role because she was the person who designed the costumes used by the girls who were taking part in cultural activities.
