Koor Gai Ngong joined the SPLA in 1985 and have fought in many South Sudanese towns including Maridi, Yambio and the Eastern cities. In 1999, Koor with many other SPLA soldiers were transferred to Eastern Sudan known to many as Sudan new brigade.


One day on a mission to clear a landmine in an area of the operation, Koor was injured when the mine went off. Both of his arms were severely wounded and the rest of his body. He was transferred to Asmara for treatment where both of his arms were amputated.
