In 1984, Jool Deng Chot Anyang joined the Sudanese People Liberation Movement/Army in Ethiopia. Jool was among the young South Sudanese who left their villages and towns to fight for more freedom in the South and Sudan at large. Jool was trained and graduated with Koriom battalions.

In 1989, Jool obtained another name from the Commander in Chief and Chairmen of SPLM Dr John Garang as Matiop de Garang Deng. Married twice but both relationships came to a sad end with the death of all his biological children and partners. Even after the independence of South Sudan, Matiop was still suffering in Bhar el Gazal region until he was helped to return to his village recently by South Sudan current Minister of defence Kuol Manyang Juuk. Matiop's first interview on SBS Dinka is both emotional and will help many South Sudanese to understand the level of suffering endured by South Sudanese veterans.
