To shout – you probably know it means to say something very loud.

We can shout for a lot of different reasons. You can shout to show anger, frustration or warn someone about something:
Ɣok aleu buk kiiu erin ka tɛ̈ɛ̈kic looi rot. Yïïn aleeu ku ba kiiu ku ba riɛ̈ɛ̈ŋ puöu nyuɔɔth, agɔɔth wala lɛ̈ɛ̈k raandɛt erin ke dɛ̈ɛ̈t:
  • The teacher shouted to quieten the class.
  • dupiööc aci kiiu ku bi ɣön cɔɔl alɔ thöök lïk.
You can shout when you’re happy, surprised, or want to support your sports team:
Yïn aleeu ba kiiu naye ci yïïn puöu miɛ̈t, gääi, wala wïc ku ba kuɔɔny du nyuɔ̈ɔ̈th tɛn akutdun thuëëc:
  • I shouted when my team scored the winning goal!
  • Ɣɛ̈n ci kiiu wën ci kääckië göön tiɛ̈ɛ̈m ɣok tääu!
But it has can also have other meanings. For example., it can mean to pay for someone else’s drink or a meal.
Mɛnë yen aleu aya ku bi näŋ wɛt den dɛt yic. Cimenë nada., Yën aleu bi wɛt de yic ku ba wëëu cuätpiny tɛn raan ee piiu wala ee miëth.

  • I’ll shout you a coffee.
  • Yïn aba ɣɔɔc buun.
  • After the game, I shouted my mate a drinks.
  • Tɛ ci thuëc thook, Ɣɛ̈ bi kɔc cïen ye ɣok thuëc ɣɔɔc ke deek ka.
Or when something makes a strong impression:
Wala naye ke wën cï raandɛt yeen looi bi kɔc riɔ̈ɔ̈k nhïïm:
  • Her dress really shouts confidence.
  • Alaath tïŋ kënë aci yeen yiëk dhëëŋ.
Or sometimes, to give someone a call.
Wala tɛdɛ̈t, ee ku ba raandɛɛt a cɔɔl.
  • I’ll give you a shout later when I’m free.
  • Yin ba yuöp läthɛɛr tɛ ci ɣɛn cïn lääu.
On the radio, you may hear DJs giving a shout out to someone who is listening – perhaps because they have a birthday, or because they are thanking them for supporting their show.
