Korok Crisis: Korok East death toll expected to rise after the death of person number 34

Korok East in Lol State, South Sudan has been destroyed by thunderstorm and fire. The death of is now at 34 people but chief Garang Akec Deng cautioned that the number could rise because many people are in critical condition now in hospital (Podcast in Dinka Language).


Garang Akec Deng is chief of Mangar Makuac, Boma which is one of the villages affected by the Sunday’s fire told SBS Dinka that:

 

Like many other families; I lost my 11 years old son and everything that I owned. All families are affected; every person is now sleeping outside without a roof on their heads. Livestock is dead, and the stores for food are burnt to ashes. We are left with nothing but suffering. Our waterpoints are destroyed too. Our community is in the brink of a big disaster because we are left in real poverty.’

Korok east was stroke by this thunderstorm on Sunday, and since then, the Government of South Sudan promised to ‘investigate’ according to Ateny Wek Ateny the Presidential spoke person, but there was no particular pledge made in terms of humanitarian assistance to the community or individuals affected.
