William Buol Lual Mayen was a South Sudanese former chairman of Kakuma Refugee Camp and a teacher. Buol with many other groups worked with many unaccompanied minors before many of them resettled to the United States in the earlier 2000s.


He is currently living in Bor the capital of Jonglei State in South Sudan. Buol was born in the North East of Bor town in Pathuyith village. He started his early education in the village school in Mathiang before moving to many other schools across Sudanese. He was able to go to exile for first to attend his secondary school in Ethiopia in the 1960s. Buol graduated from Juba University and then went into teachings.

In 1984, he survived an accidental ambush on which Benjamin Ajok Deng known as Ajok-Malong was killed. Buol was injured on his thigh but survived to tell his story. Buol story is fascinating because he has been to all the twos wars and his role has always been significant. In this part one, we talk to William about his life story for the first time on SBS Dinka Radio, but part two will cover his teachings and the Kakuma refugee camp stories.
