Keer Aleu Deng was born in Mading-Aweil but as a child, he and his mother were kidnapped by the Baqgara tribe of Sudan. Keer and his mother were separated while they were in captivity. Keer and his mother were taken as slaves by Northern Sudanese called Zakaria. As a young boy, his role was to look after the goats for his master. One day one of the goats got lost and as result, Keer was badly beaten and tortured by Zakaria. Zakaria hanged him upside down with his legs tied to the tree and poured pepper to his eyes, a situation which is alleged to have caused glaucoma that triggered his blindness. Many years later, Keer was rescued but never saw his mother. Keer was helped to the United States over fives ago but now doing amazing things. Here is his interview on SBS Dinka Radio.
