Monday 13 February is World Radio Day, a day to celebrate radio as a medium, improve international cooperation between broadcasters and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves. Radio is recognised as a powerful communication tool and low-cost medium reaching the widest audience in the world. Radio is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people including women, youth, people who are illiterate, have disability, or live in poverty, while offering a platform to participate in public discussion. Furthermore, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief. However, despite renewed interest in radio across new technological platforms such broadband, mobiles and tablets, it is estimated that up to a billion people still do not have access to radio. Australia for UNHCR is partnering with SBS Radio for World Radio Day 2017, to highlight the importance of radio in UNHCRs (the UN Refugee Agencys) emergency humanitarian communication and support, and to encourage Australians to donate to UNHCR.

UNHCR is urgently appealing for public support to help it protect families displaced by conflict in South Sudan and across Africa.

Australia for UNHCR is the agencys national partner for Australia - learn more and make a donation by visiting Australia for UNHCR World Radio Day
