Gabriel Jok Riak was born in Anyidi. He started his school in Bor and moved to Anyidi in 1973. As 16 years old, he joined the revolution in 1983. He was trained and fought the first battle at Malualgahoth. He was youngest at 16 years old among all.

Dr. John had refused for him to be trained leave alone seeing him as part of the operation. He insisted and argued his way to the training. Despite of all that was done to prevent him for his own wellbeing, he joined and fought at the first battle. He was wounded and left behind but one older soldier insisted that he shouldn't be left behind. He was dragged to the safety. Here is the part of interview that SBS Dinka conducted while he was in hospital in Kenya.
