We unpack hot topics about Australia's system of government with author of Beyond Federation Dr Klaas Woldring. Is our system of parliamentary representation working effectively?

Part 4 - Changing the electoral system

Dr Woldring says we need to look at a solution of representation that meets Australia's needs today.

His proposal is to change the House of Representatives electoral system to a multi-party system from multi-member electorate districts, requiring governments to form Coalition.

He says it's a well-tested system used in 86 countries - most notably adopted in Europe post WWII.

Dr Woldring thinks a multi-party system also produces better representation of women.
