Anne Norman, a Shakuhachi performer, improvisor and composer, will play solo at Canberra Nara Candle Festival on 27th October to celebrate the 25 years of the sister city relationships shared between Canberra and Nara city.


Anne has always been fascinated by music. She was originally trained on flute when she was young. In 1986, she went to Kobe, in Japan and meets a Japanese traditional instrument, Shakuhachi. She was quickly attracted not just by the sound of Shakuhachi but also its aesthetics.

She has created her own style of music and performed with a numerous artists with different instruments not just in Australia and Japan, but also around the world. 

This Interview includes 2 sound tracks; Whispered Shadows (Solo Shakuhachi by Anne) and Tidal Drift (Shakuhachi by Anne, Didgeridoo by Sanshi and Beatboxer Reo Matsumoto).
