COVID-19 update: NSW cases grow, SA on track to end lockdown

This is your update on the Coronavirus in Australia for 24 July 2021.

 

  • NSW cases on the rise.  
  • Anti-lockdown protesters march in Sydney and Melbourne. 
  • Victoria declares all  of NSW a COVID-19 "extreme risk zone”.
  • South Australia is on track to end week-long lockdown. 

New South Wales  

NSW records its the highest number of daily new infections since the Delta outbreak began in June. NSW Police issued 246 fines to people for breaching public health orders. The death toll of the current Delta outbreak is now six.  
 
Heightened restrictions are now in place for two addition local government areas in western Sydney, Cumberland and Blacktown. Only authorised workers can leave these areas.

Victoria 

Victoria has recorded 12 new locally acquired cases, with only two in the community while infectious. 

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton made the "extreme risk zone" declaration for all of NSW late on Friday, effective from 11.59pm

  • SA Premier Steven Marshall says the state is on track and likely to come out of lockdown on Tuesday with schools opening on Wednesday .
  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison can't commit to an immediate increase of Pfizer vaccines for New South Wales. 
  • Thousands of anti-lockdown protesters breached COVID-19 restrictions and gathered in Sydney and Melbourne.

COVID-19 MYTH:

Healthy young people are not affected by COVID-19. It only harms and kills old or sick people.

COVID-19 FACT:

The virus impacts older people and those with underlying conditions more heavily, but also harms and kills some healthy young people.
