COVID-19 update: Two-thirds of new cases in NSW are aged under 40

This is your update on the Coronavirus in Australia for 31 July 2021.


  • Case numbers remain high in South Western and Western Sydney.
  • Victoria extends the interval between Pfizer doses.
  • South East Queensland enters lockdown from 4 pm today.
  • Tasmania closes its borders with Queensland.

New South Wales 

NSW has recorded 210 new locally acquired cases and one death – a man in his sixties from South Western Sydney.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard says two-thirds of the new cases are people under the age of 40 while six in intensive care are in their twenties.

There have been 3190 locally acquired cases in NSW since the beginning of the Delta outbreak on June 16.

Victoria

The state has recorded two new locally acquired cases, both linked to the existing outbreak, but only one was in quarantine while infectious.

Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley says the minimum amount of time between the two doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be lengthened from three to six weeks.

  • After recording six new Delta cases, 11 local government areas in South East Queensland will enter a three-day lockdown from 4pm today.
  • The Australian Medical Association has thrown its support behind the Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine to boost inoculation rates.
  • Tasmania will close its border to South East Queensland from 4pm today.
