Government to revamp citizenship test

Australia’s citizenship test is getting its first update in more than a decade, with a renewed focus on Australian values.Prospective citizens will now be required to study up on freedom of speech, the importance of democracy and equal opportunity.

Under the new regime, future Australians have to take a revamped test - the old one focused very much on Australian history and democracy. Acting immigration minister Alan Tudge says those prospective citizens must answer five multiple choice questions correctly to pass.

The revamped test will include questions like…

Are people free to choose who they marry?

In Australia, do religious laws override Australian law?

And should men and women be provided equal opportunity?

Carmen Lazar from the Assyrian Resource Centre talks about the revamp and says the main five questions about Australian values are important to deflect the way of life in Australia and also there are many issues like domestic violence which has to be dealt with as part of making people understand that this is one behaviour Australians reject and want new Australians to respect.
