In March 1993, Syriac schools began in northern Iraq. During its history, they suffered difficult periods and various obstacles, but it was a successful march. Schools celebrated the International Mother Language Day on February 21, 2020, at Ankawa- Erbil.
We met the General Director of Syriac Education in the region, Mr. Nazar Hanna Khizo, who said fruits of this experience are joyful despite the emergence of some problems and obstacles, but a mature generation has arisen and stick to its nation and language.
Mr. Khizo added that our children were learning all the subjects in their language, and it was a new experience, but it led to very good results.
He said that the obstacles and difficulties were the result of the economic situation in the region. and the occurrence of forced displacement waves negatively affected education and we lost an important educational cadre.
Mr. Khizo added that the curricula were subject to development and change based on the decisions of the Ministry of Education in the region. The scientific subjects were changed to English language for the benefit of future students.
He pointed out that the Syriac education started and is active because of the support of our communities abroad through the Assyrian Aid Society, which bore the burden from the beginning.
"Erbil schools celebrated the International Mother Language Day to reinforce the sense of the importance of the language that preserves our existence," he said.
