There are many Assyrian villages in northern Iraq that suffer from encroachments on their lands. In Nala, villagers complain about their problem with some Kurds violating their lands. On July 29, 2020, the National Unity Alliance submitted a request to the Presidency of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament to consider this issue.
We spoke to Mr. Romeo Hakari, head of the National Unity Alliance bloc in the region’s parliament, and the Secretary-General of Bet- Nahrain Democratic Party (BNDP) and chair of the Social Affairs and Protection of Human Rights Committee in Parliament who said that we called for the presidency of the region to study the file of abuses on the lands of our people’s villages because of the sensitivity of the issue and its impact on the life and freedom of the people of those villages.
Hakari added that we have given priority to overcoming the injustice that occurred and falls on the people of these villages, and to put an end to future encroachments.
Hakari confirmed that President Masoud Barzani recommended the formation of a committee to investigate this issue six months ago, and we visited the villages and spoke to our people there.
Mr. Hakari said that "as parties, we represent our people, we bear the responsibility not to solve the problem of abuse, because each party moves on its own and this weakens our position". Hakari believes that if we work together, it will not take us thirty years the issue remains unresolved.
