Associate Professor Shameran Slewa-Younan from Western Sydney University presented a lecture on the impacts on our emotional well-being from Covid-19 and how we can move forward. The lecture was organized by Sydney Multicultural Community Services, it was presented live on Facebook and via Zoom, Tuesday 2 June at 10 AM.We selected some main points from the presentation.
Prof. Shameran said that there are a lot of information about COVID-19 on SBS website where everyone can benefit from.
She said when somebody faces something stressful like this pandemic, it is normal to feel nervous, anxious, depressed, and this is normal. But when anxiety and stress increase, they turn into illness and affect our daily functioning.
She added that the signs of mental illness are interrupting our connections with others, our ability on focusing, etc.
She said we can reduce anxiety and stress by reducing our exposure to media, especially social media. Challenging our thoughts, take care of ourselves, reduce alcohol, coffee and tea which affect our sleep.
