The event took place on Tuesday 15 March and was hosted by Sophie Cotsis MLC. The book was officially launched by actor, writer and director Lex Marinos OAM, who spoke tenderly of his own experiences growing up in a family owned milk bar.
According to the organisers, “the launch took place in the Theatrette at Sydney’s Parliament House and was at capacity with people who were eager to see over 30 years of research come together in the release of the book. Alexakis and Janiszewski spoke passionately about their research and the important of the Greek Café in Australia’s cultural identity”.
The books tracks Alexakis’ and Janiszewski’s extensive exploration of Greek cafés and milk bars in various Australian suburbs and towns, most of which no longer exist. They captured the faces and stories, the style and the ethos that gave our popular culture one of its most memorable expressions.
The duo will also be presenting a lecture at the famous Paragon Cafe, Katoomba, on Sunday 29 May at 2.00 pm with afternoon tea provided for $12.
