Dr. Stanko Kovačević is an engineer at Serbian company Solar Energy Focus. His latest patent, a solar energy concentrator, is so far the most efficient way to harness the sun's power in the world.
Serbian engineer, Dr. Stanko Kovačević, says he has found a way to put Australia's sunshine to good use. His company, Solar Energy Focus, in collaboration with science Institute Mihajlo Pupin in Belgrade, Serbia, have developed a solar energy concentrator that is the most efficient technology to date.
"Our solar energy concentrator is 3.5 times more efficient than a normal solar panel, and 1.6 times more efficient than a parabolic trough system. This means that the solar energy concentrator is, currently, the best way to harness energy from the sun," says Dr. Kovačević
Dr. Kovačević says that technology innovation in the field of renewable energy should be every countries priority. He says that patents such as his own will, without a doubt, help decrease the effects of global warming and climate change.
"Renewable energy is something the whole world is talking about at the moment," says Dr. Kovačević, "and technologies, such as the concentrator, mean that we can use energy from the sun to power our lives without the side effects we are currently experiencing. A switch to renewable energy will mean an end to climate catastrophe around the world, including global warming as a consequence of green house gas emissions."
The solar energy concentrator is currently only located at the Mihajlo Pupin Institute in Serbia. However, Dr. Kovačević insists that it is always open to visitors and investors. He says that, while the Serbian government has accepted and praised his technology, they don't have a strong enough economy to put renewable technology into use.
"Serbia's economy is simply not strong enough to finance a project in renewable energy," says Dr. Kovačević, " We are currently in talks with government departments and investigating ways we can implement this technology into already existing infrastructure. It may mean that we work alongside existing industries and, at least, drastically reduce the amount of, for example, coal that is being burnt. Serbia can't do it alone which is why we are looking for countries that can be our partners in this."
Dr. Kovačević believes Australia would be the ideal candidate. He recently visited Sydney to give a presentation to potential investors.
"Australia not only has an ideal climate to build a solar energy field or solar energy plant," says Dr. Kovačević ,"it also has the kind of economy that can support this. The whole world is realising that we need urgent action. The only way to secure a future for this planet is to consider renewable energy sources."
