20-man USA Basketball team named

The USA Basketball team has announced a 20-man roster for their training warm-up games to initially play in Melbourne and Sydney ahead of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.

Led by James Harden of Houston Rockets, NBA’s current MVP,  six other 2019 NBA All-Stars headline the squad including Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards), Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers), Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors), Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks) and Kemba Walker (Charlotte Hornets).  

Two of the NBA’s brightest young stars in Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz) and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) will also see action in the training camp that will be held in Las Vegas from 05 to 09 August.

Head coach Gregg Popovich (San Antonio Spurs) will be assisted by Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors), Lloyd Pierce (Atlanta Hawks) and Jay Wright (Villanova University) .

The USA team will arrive in Melbourne on August 19 to face the Australian Boomers  in front of an expected over 110,000 fans across two massive games at Marvel Stadium on 22 and 24 of August.  The all-star team will face off Canada Basketball in  Sydney on 26 August

“It will be an amazing experience. I think it will be  a lot of fun,”  says Papovich, who has headcoached the US men’s national team since 2015.  “Having a few of these game ahead of time is of paramount importance for our preparation."

On Australia Boomers, Popovich says:  “They’re  well-disciplined, they’re talented, they are seasoned, they have an  excellent opportunity to be very,very successful. They can win this easily as anybody.”

Ben Simmons is the headliner for the Australian Boomers’ 17-man training camp squad, named last month and features nine NBA players.  The  final team of 12 will be chosen after the August training camp.

Simmons  (Philadelphia) will be joined by a host of fellow NBA players — his teammate Jonah Bolden,  Joe Ingles (Utah Jazz),  Matthew Dellavedova and Deng Adel (Cleveland Dellavedova), Aron Baynes (Boston Celtics), Andrew Bogut (Golden State Warriors), and Mitch Creek  (Minnesota Timberwolves). Point Guard  Patty Mills will play action against his mentor Popovich.

The Boomers also feature eight NBL players including Nathan Sobey, Mitch McCarron, Nick Kay, Chris Goulding, and Todd Blanchfield named. Jock Landale and Brock Motum who play in Europe complete the team, round out the 17-man squad.

Unfortunately, Danté Exum( Utah Jazz) will not be able to play due to injury and Detroit Pistons did not allow Thon Maker to play for Australia.

The squad features eight NBL players — counting Bogut and Creek — with Nathan Sobey, Mitch McCarron, Nick Kay, Chris Goulding, and Todd Blanchfield. The duo of Australians performing at a high level in Europe, Jock Landale and Brock Motum, round out the 17-man squad.

The World Cup will be held in China from 31 August to 15 September. The Boomers are in Group H, one that features Canada, Lithuania, and Senegal. The United States are in Group E with Turkey, Czech Republic and Japan. The Philippines will be grouped with Angola, Italy and Serbia.
