The film tells the untold story of former Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon who had welcomed thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Germany during the Nazi regime—a critical time when other world leaders are refusing to take in Jews.
Quezon’s heroic act is relatively unknown to many. And this is the reason why Manila-based film director Matthew Rossen says he wanted to tell it.
“What I found to be so amazing was that not only did people overseas not know the story, but most Filipinos didn’t either. It was kind of lost in history and only the Jewish community here knew about it,” Rosen told The JC Network.
“Quezon was a bigger hero with the Jews in the Philippines than he was with the Filipinos.”
A story about empathy and humanity
Quezon’s Game is more than just a Filipino biographical film. Whilst political and strategic in its execution, the core message of the film revolves around empathy and humanity.
When everyone refuses to help in fear of repercussions, we can find it in ourselves to look beyond races and borders to extend help to those who direly need it, in whatever way we can.
