Key Points
- Expect to spend around $200-300 if you're filling a box with canned goods and non-perishables.
- Don't rush. Wait for sales before purchasing.
- Set aside $25 a week for balikbayan box items.
'May PERAan' is SBS Filipino's podcast series which features financial experts seeking to answer the most common questions about money and finances.
"You can have around a $200-300 budget for the things you want to add to a balikbayan box," Lowella McAlister, owner of a balikbayan box service, shares.
When purchasing items, Lowella emphasises that saving means waiting and looking for alternatives.
Don't be in a rush.
"Put aside money every week, let's say $25 a week until you reach $300 for your purchases. Buy when you're ready. Give yourself around 3 months for the funds.
"Wait for end-of-season sales. Look through grocery catalogues for weekly sales. Why do you have to pay full price if there are always sales?"
Shop in factory outlets, warehouses and reject stores.
"I buy items that have long expiration dates or aren't perishable in bulk. That's how I save."
Lowella also shares that DFOs, warehouses and reject stores are good places to buy name brands for less and alternative brands that are of good quality.
"Find cheaper options.
"Reject stores have the same good quality items for less because they didn't pass stringent quality controls; but they're still good! They're not expired. There might just be a small flaw in the packaging."
