"Electricity is so expensive nowadays! I try to limit using the heater when the days are really cold or it's raining, when it's like 2 or 3 degrees; but when it's around 10 degrees, I just bundle up," financial expert Maria Papa shares.

Aside from bundling up and wearing layers of clothing, Maria gives a few more tips on how to save on the costs of electricity during winter.

1. Use an electric blanket.

According to Maria, you can save a lot on costs if you use an electric blanket instead of a heater.

"An electric blanket costs about 4 cents an hour, compared to 15 cents an hour if you turn on the heater. You'll save a lot more money."

2. Take shorter hot showers.

"I know we Filipinos like our long showers," she laughs, adding, "but one way of reducing energy costs is by shortening your hot showers - even if it's just during winter."

3. Hang clothes outside instead of using a clothes dryer.

Using a dryer can cost an average of 12 cents per kilowatt-hour.

If the weather permits, hang clothes outside instead.

4. Explore solar energy.

While Maria lives in an apartment, she says that her friends who live in houses have turned to solar energy to cut down on costs.

"There are government rebates if you buy solar; and while it can be expensive in the beginning, you'll get back the returns through the years."

5. Research and compare energy providers.

Just like with loans, Maria shares that it's best to shop around for the best rates.

"You can ask your provider for flexible payment options. You can opt to pay monthly instead of quarterly, for example."
