Highlights

  • Expedia coined the term ‘Greatest of All Trips’ (GOAT), which many are looking to experience.
  • Rome, Bali, London, and Paris are among the top destinations people are eyeing next year.
  • Around 40% of respondents said that they are more than willing to splurge on future travels.

Although the pandemic is far from over, Australians are now able to travel overseas after nearly two years – albeit cautiously.

According to Expedia’s 2022 Travel Trends Report, three out of four Australians are hoping to make up for lost time by looking forward to splurging on their next big trip.

The report states that in order to experience the ‘Greatest of All Trips’, respondents are looking to forego some traditional travel advice for more indulgent ones.

More spontaneity, less scheduling

With the unpredictability of the times, travelers have learned to embrace spontaneity.

Around 25% of respondents are willing to live in the moment and 26 percent will aim for more flexibility.

Splurging

Typically, travel advice will be lean more towards on saving money while on a holiday; however, due to the lack of travel, people are more than willing to splurge of their trips.

About 15% are seeking upgraded rooms or flights, 16% are wanting to visit bucket-list destinations and 32% aren't willing to settle for just a 'good' trip but a 'great' trip.

Immersive experiences over ‘touristy’ ones

40% want to try new food, 31% of which want to experiment with local dishes. 14% want to attend local music events and 23% want to experience more off-the-beaten track destinations.

Thrill seeking

With almost two years of isolation and lockdowns, 41% of respondents are looking to experience exhilaration again.

11% want to try daring activities, while 24% are looking to have an unforgettable night-out.

More mindfulness

While some travelers were previously about travelling to as many destinations as possible, travelling in 2022 will be more about the quality of the trip.

Around 24% want to spend less time on their devices while on a holiday and 27% want to spend as much time as they can in one destination instead of going to several locations for a shorter period of time.
