For these elderly, growing old is just the beginning of life. They believe that life at 60 is not the end but a start of a more fruitful and productive life.
Just recently, Unified Filipino Elderly Association of Victoria held their first-ever induction of officers. As a newly-formed group, they are looking forward to organising more social activities for the Filipino and non-Filipino elderly of Victoria. "We have worthwhile causes for the elderly, not only the Filipinos but to all Australian elderly citizens," says Barbara Price of UFEA.
UFEA stands on one common goal- to help and do something for the community. " Our group wants to do something for the community, to partake to worthwhile causes for the seniors because we are seniors we know what the seniors need especially the isolated and lonely seniors. We want to bring them out of that loneliness," adds Barbara Price.

In just a short time, UFEA was able to organise fun-filled activities for the elderly such as karaoke nights, costume and dress-up parties, weekly activities of singing and dancing, a regular Tai chi session every Saturday to supplement the physical and mental well-being of the elderly, and information sessions to educate the elderly with topics relevant to their needs like wills, probate and aged care. "We've done sessions on dental health, hygiene, diabetes sessions. We are fully-booked for the whole year and next year," says Price.
Although led by Filipinos, the group welcomes other ethnicity. "We see French, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese elderly every Saturday. We meet at the Melalheuca hub and we open our doors for them," says Price with excitement.
The participation and awareness of elderly people is much more evident as compared before. This means more are reaching out to the community. However, there are still a number that are hesitant to participate.

Price said although they are aware of the social activities and services, there is a great need to encourage them to come out of their house and socialise with others. " They need a push to come out of their sanctuary. Once they come out, they're okay," she adds.
Being uprooted from a native place can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. While it is normal to feel this way UFEA wants to assure every senior that there are people around them who are willing to help them get through any struggle. "Just to let them know there are always some Filipinos around you. You have an association, a network, who's always willing to be a part of your life."
UFEA is a group formed early 2018 solely dedicated to help in promoting Filipino cultural activities and assist elderly Filipinos. The group brings older people together to celebrate the Filipino heritage, promote healthy lifestyle, encourage learning and sharing, provide social support to members and the disadvantaged, organise sporting and entertainment functions for the people of Kingston and surrounds and meets socially on a regular basis.
