The federal government is moving to strengthen Australia’s childcare system in the wake of serious abuse allegations out of Melbourne. A proposed bill would give authorities the power to cut off funding to childcare providers that fail to meet safety and quality standards but some say the changes don't go far enough.

Key Points
  • The Albanese Government’s first two bills in its second term address education — one cuts student debts by 20%, the other responds to childcare abuse allegations.
  • New powers would allow unannounced inspections without a warrant.
  • Calls grow for a national child safety minister and cabinet-level focus.
