With the start of the new year, several changes will begin to be implemented in Australia on the first of January, 2026.


Key Points
  • More than one million Australians will receive additional payments for Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY, Youth Disability Support Pension and Carer Allowance.
  • The maximum price of a Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme prescription will be capped at $25.
  • The application fee for obtaining a new passport for Australians will increase by $10 making it $422.
  • From January 5 under the federal government's 3-day guarantee, families eligible for the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) will be entitled to at least 72 hours of subsidized child care every fortnight.

  • For 2025–26, Australia's permanent migration program remains at 185,000 places, unchanged from the previous year, with continued emphasis on skilled migration.
