Amid the emerging allegations, both federal and state governments have outlined responses, though there are growing calls for these actions to be fast-tracked.

Key Points
  • The community and parents were shocked by the arrest of a 26-year-old childcare worker who is now facing more than 70 child sex offence charges involving eight children at a centre in Point Cook, in Melbourne’s west.
  • In response, the Victorian state government has ordered immediate reforms, including a safety review to explore whether installing CCTV cameras in childcare centres should be made mandatory.
  • The federal government, meanwhile, plans to introduce changes that include a proposal to withdraw funding from childcare centres that fail to meet required safety standards.
