Federal government MPs are playing down reports that conservative South Australian Senator, Cory Bernardi, is preparing to split from the Coalition and launch his own breakaway party.
Senator Bernardi is keeping a low profile for now but it's believed he will make his move shortly.
It comes at a bad time for the Coalition, which has suffered some of its worst poll results since Malcolm Turnbull replaced Tony Abbott as Prime Minister.
