In a country better known for basketball, volleyball and boxing, three young Filipino-Australians are helping introduce cricket to more Filipinos. Amelia Valdez, Elyza Wall and Zoe Wong are playing not only to win, but also to represent their heritage and create opportunities for the next generation of Filipina cricketers.
Key Points
- Young athletes making history. Amelia became the youngest Philippine player across the men’s and women’s formats to score 50 runs in a T20 International and later served as vice-captain. Elyza and Zoe also debuted for the Philippines at 15.
- Cricket as a connection to Filipino heritage. Representing the Philippines has helped the three Filipino-Australians strengthen their connection to their heritage and the wider Filipino community.
- Creating pathways for the next generation. Beyond competing, they are helping promote grassroots cricket and inspiring more young girls to take up the sport as the Blue Caps continue to rise internationally.
Cricket is a fun and safe space where I can be myself, make heaps of new friends, and represent the Philippines to the world at the same time.Amelia Valdez
Especially for girls, they are often like sensitive of getting involved with the game... it can be intimidating. I think creating a environment that they can feel more safe and comfortable and just play a game that they can enjoy is quite important.Zoe Wong

Playing for a country on a national level is amazing and it's a great opportunity for me.Elyza Wall
