A “peace rally” in support of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is set to take place this Sunday in Melbourne. However, the event is drawing criticism from several Filipino-Australian groups and human rights advocates who are voicing strong opposition to the expected attendance of Vice President Sara Duterte and Senator Imee Marcos.

KEY POINTS
  • Melba Marginson, convenor of the Australians for Philippine Human Rights Network, shares their stand and urges the Australian government to take action.
  • According to groups such as BAYAN Australia, Gabriela, Migrante, and AnakBayan the visit appears to signal support for impunity and could sow division within the Filipino community in Australia.
  • As of now, the Australian government has not released an official statement regarding the visa status or travel plans of the visiting officials.
