First, there was the brutal death of Saudi Arabian journalist and critic Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Then there was the targeting of the United States news outlet CNN with a package containing a pipe bomb.

Those two high-profile incidents in recent weeks highlight just some of the dangers faced by people reporting the news around the world.

The United Nations organisation UNESCO is using Friday, November 2 to draw attention to the journalists risking their lives to report the truth.
