Losing a loved one overseas can be overwhelming for Filipino families, as they cope with grief while navigating unfamiliar processes and urgent paperwork. Many ask the same question: can their loved one be brought home to the Philippines, and how? Assistance to Nationals Officer Ronna Baceller of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney explains the process.

Key Points
  • If a family decides to return the body or cremated remains to the Philippines, additional paperwork is required. This includes a Consular Mortuary Certificate, which permits the international transport of human remains.
  • Repatriation can be costly, with expenses typically ranging from $6,000 to $15,000. Costs vary depending on location, airline fees, and the services required, but may include embalming, an international-standard casket, air freight charges, and documentation fees.
  • Most families engage a licensed funeral home or mortuary service in the host country with experience in international repatriation.
  • Filipino nationals, international students, tourists, and even undocumented Filipinos can seek assistance from the consulate, while Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are supported by the Department of Migrant Workers.
